This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to be invited to BET’s annual Black Girls Rock event.
Without gushing too much, it was an inspiring and entertaining celebration of Beverly Bond’s non-profit organization, which aims to mentor and empower young women of color. It was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, which of course, also made it a star-studded style flex-fest.
Being fully aware that I would be stepping through the same honored carpets as Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae, Eva Longoria, Missy Elliot, and Dionne Warwick, I was decidedly nervous about…well, everything.
What if my hair looked funny? What if I was underdressed? What if I was overdressed? What if I spilled my drink, and some of it almost splashed near Alicia Key’s shoes? Would I be able to survive the absolute horror? I’ve already been dead once, for crying out loud.
After some consideration of the “Whatever shall I wear?” variety, I fought the initial impulse to go on a shopping spree, and simply donned a few things that had been sitting in my closet for a while. I did chop two inches off my hair, though. What? Had to get something new.
For all the awesome performances, and celeb gawking, check out the show, which will air November 4th at 8pm on BET. It’ll be great fun to watch, and you might actually catch me in the audience, hopefully not picking my nose.
